Stratigraphy and Phylogeny of the Giant Extinct Rat Kangaroos

چکیده

The Giant Rat-kangaroos were placed in the Propleopinae by Archer & F\annery (1985) and in the Hypsiprymnodontidae by Ride (1993). Cladistic analysis of Ekaltadeta material from Riversleigh, northwestern Queensland (Wroe, 1996) suggested that a middle to late Miocene dichotomy in Ekaltadeta may have produced two lineages of Plio-Pleistocene Propleopus. indicating polyphyly for Propleopus and paraphyly for Ekaltadeta. Metrical data for propleopines and stratigraphic information support Wroe's (1996) cladistic analysis of propleopines. D Propleopinae. Hypsiprymnodontidae, Riversleigh, Ekaltadeta, cladistics.

Locomotion in Extinct Giant Kangaroos: Were Sthenurines Hop-Less Monsters?

Sthenurine kangaroos (Marsupialia, Diprotodontia, Macropodoidea) were an extinct subfamily within the family Macropodidae (kangaroos and rat-kangaroos). These "short-faced browsers" first appeared in the middle Miocene, and radiated in the Plio-Pleistocene into a diversity of mostly large-bodied forms, more robust than extant forms in their build. The largest (Procoptodon goliah) had an estimat...

Late pleistocene Australian marsupial DNA clarifies the affinities of extinct megafaunal kangaroos and wallabies.

Understanding the evolution of Australia's extinct marsupial megafauna has been hindered by a relatively incomplete fossil record and convergent or highly specialized morphology, which confound phylogenetic analyses. Further, the harsh Australian climate and early date of most megafaunal extinctions (39-52 ka) means that the vast majority of fossil remains are unsuitable for ancient DNA analyse...

The Affinities of the Rat - kangaroos ( Marsupialia ) as revealed by a comparative study of the Female Urogenital System

According to the accepted view the family Macropodidae is divided into three sub-families, the Hypsiprymnodontinae, the Potoroinae, and the Macropodinae. The members of the first two are collectively known as the rat-kangaroos and the third sub-family comprises the true kangaroos and wallabies. The present paper is concerned mainly with the rat-kangaroos, which consist of five genera, as follow...

Placing cryptic, recently extinct, or hypothesized taxa into an ultrametric phylogeny using continuous character data: a case study with the lizard Anolis roosevelti.

In recent years, enormous effort and investment has been put into assembling the tree of life: a phylogenetic history for all species on Earth. Overwhelmingly, this progress toward building an ever increasingly complete phylogeny of living things has been accomplished through sophisticated analysis of molecular data. In the modern genomic age, molecular genetic data have become very easy and in...

Speciation Generates Mosaic Genomes in Kangaroos

The iconic Australasian kangaroos and wallabies represent a successful marsupial radiation. However, the evolutionary relationship within the two genera, Macropus and Wallabia, is controversial: mitochondrial and nuclear genes, and morphological data have produced conflicting scenarios regarding the phylogenetic relationships, which in turn impact the classification and taxonomy. We sequenced a...
